Welcome Back
Welcome back to school for 2025. I hope you were able to have a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. We have started the year well and our students have settled into school and class routines with energy and enthusiasm.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new students and families starting at Tingalpa State School.
We have opened the school year with 20 classes, as we know, changes can and do occur as the numbers change. The number of children enrolled and present on Day 8 (6 February) determine the 2025 class compositions and staffing. If class changes are necessary, we will make decisions in the best interests of the students.
I believe that relationships are the corner stone to student success and I will continue to build and maintain productive relationships with students, families and staff as we start the 2025 school year together. I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new students and families joining the Tingalpa State School Community.
I am also excited to share that the French Bilingual Program at Whites Hill State College has continued to grow. This year they will have FBP classes from Prep to Year 3, as well as students in Year 7 and 8. The program will continue to build and extend over the following years.
2026 Waiting List for out of catchment enrolments for the French Bilingual Program and the English Program opens 7:00am on Tuesday, 4 February 2025.
Home/School Communication
The start of a new school year is a busy time for everyone, there will be many emails that will be sent out to ensure parents and carers are aware of school processes, policies and information. It is important that you read school emails.
If you change your email throughout the year please let office staff know so that school records can be updated by emailing details to admin@tingalpass.eq.edu.au.
Research leaves no doubt that when parents and teachers work together the educational outcomes are always better for children. In addition to improved educational outcomes a strong partnership between home and school ensures maintenance of children’s wellbeing, parents feel more confident and teachers feel supported.
All staff will respond to email and phone messages, in a timely manner, during business hours. Some staff may choose to respond outside of these hours and this is their choice to do so. However, there is no expectation that staff will respond to emails after 4:00 pm and before 8:00 am. We expect that staff would respond to communication within two rostered school days. A teacher contact list is attached.
The school newsletter will continue to go out fortnightly, on odd weeks.
Assembly will be held fortnightly on Tuesday afternoons, even weeks at 2:30pm. To help parents attend assembly when their child receives a Student of the Week award, children’s names will be published the week prior to the assembly in the School Newsletter. Please note Teachers will not be contacting parents to let them know their child is receiving an award.
Parent Information Sessions
Next week we will hold parent information sessions to discuss the 2025 school year and class arrangements. We are changing the format this year. The sessions will start with a group meeting for parents from the nominated classes for whole school messages and then break into class groups and move to their child’s class with your class teacher. A copy of presentations will be sent to parents/carers at the end of the week.
The meetings will be at the following times:

Teachers as Learners
Teachers returned to work on Wednesday 20 January to engage in professional learning. The program set the focus on pedagogy and working collaboratively to ensure consistency of practice across year levels.
Teachers engaged in professional learning on:
- Program planning for Term 1
- Student Code of Conduct
- Mandatory Training – Code of Conduct, Student Protection
- Educator wellbeing
Year 6 Student Leaders Investiture
The first assembly for each year is the investiture of our student leaders. This includes all Year 6 students and the senior leaders of the school. Student Leaders for 2025 will receive their badges at this assembly.
We will also recognise the Cre8 Crew students, Year 5 students taking on a leadership role for Semester 1.
Phones Away for the Day
All Queensland state school students must keep their mobile phones ‘away for the day’ during school hours. Notifications on wearable devices, such as smartwatches, must be switched off so that phone calls, messages and other notifications cannot be sent or received during school hours.
The decision to implement a consistent, state-wide approach to putting mobile phones away during the school day is based on the advice of Ms Cheryl Vardon AO, former Queensland Family and Children’s Commissioner, who completed an independent review of Queensland’s approach to mobile phones. Ms Vardon’s review included consultation with key education stakeholders, such as principals, school staff, students and families from each education region, as well as a review of recent research on student use of mobile phones and personal devices in schools.
‘Away for the day’ supports schools to maintain a strong focus on student educational achievement, wellbeing and engagement by:
- providing optimal learning and teaching environments
- encouraging increased face-to-face social interactions between students
- promoting the health and wellbeing of students through increased social interaction and physical activity
- reducing the potential for students to be exposed to the negative impacts of the digital world, resulting from unsafe or inappropriate technology use.
PARENT FAQs
When does ‘away for the day’ begin?
From Term 1 2025, all state school students must keep their mobile phones ‘away for the day’ during school hours.
Can my child take their phone with them when travelling to and from school?
Yes, students are allowed to bring their mobile phone or wearable device to school but must hand into the office as soon as they arrive at school. Students will be able to use their phone outside of school hours (to and from school) to support safe travel, and to make contact with parents, friends and part-time employers.
My child’s phone does not connect to the internet, will they be allowed to use their phone?
No. Any phone or device that has the ability to connect to telecommunication networks or the internet must be away for the day.
My child uses their phone / wearable device to manage and monitor a health condition. Can they still use it?
Yes, exemptions will be made available for students who require access to their mobile phone or wearable device for health monitoring purposes. Please speak with the school principal regarding processes for requesting an exemption.
My child forgot their lunch, how will I contact them?
You can continue to contact your child through existing school processes, such as phoning the school office.
How will I contact my child at school in the event of an emergency?
In the event of an emergency, you will still be able to contact your child through existing school processes, such as phoning the school office.
How will my child contact me while they are at school?
If your child becomes unwell or experiences an issue during the school day, it is important that they report to a staff member in the first instance. Staff will follow appropriate school processes and make contact with parents and carers.
In the event of an emergency at school, the school will follow their Emergency Response Plan to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students and staff, which includes processes for communicating with parents and carers.
Can my child use their phone while they are on excursions?
Mobile phones and wearable devices are not to be used during school activities such as representative sport, camps and excursions.
Where will my child store their phone during the day?
Mobile phones are to be switched off as the student enters the school grounds. Mobile phones, or other electronic devices, equipped with camera functions are not to have that function accessed at ANY time whilst on school grounds.
All electronic devices, including but not limited to mobile phones, iPad, tablets, cameras are to be signed into the office on arrival at school and stored by office staff in the secured place. Electronic devices can be collected only by the student or parent at the end of the school day, or on departure from the school with a parent/carer, in the case of early departure.
Student and Parent Responsibilities
Students Responsibilities:
- Mobile phones are brought to school at entirely the owner's risk. The school will not be involved in disputes and/or investigations over damage, loss or theft.
- Phones/electronic devices must be handed in at the office on arrival at school.
- Due to privacy considerations, phone or watch cameras or audio/ visual recording devices cannot be used whilst at school.
- Phones are not to be taken on excursions or camps.
- Students breaching the policy will be subject to the student behaviour management consequences as documented in the Student Code of Conduct.
- Should the rules be breached, the student will be instructed to pass the phone to the office for the rest of the day.
- If procedures continue to not be followed, the phone will be confiscated from the student and the parent will be asked to collect the phone from the office.
Parent responsibilities:
- Reinforce that phone are to be kept at the office and turned off at all times, whilst on school premises.

I am looking forward to a great first Term.
Kind regards
Donna
Welcome back to 2025!
We are excited to welcome back all of our existing students and families, and we would like to extend an especially warm welcome to all our new Prep students and their families. It’s been wonderful to catch up with students and their families this week. I have enjoyed seeing the energy of our students as they returned to school this week.
As I moved through classrooms, it has been a pleasure to observe students learning or revising our school C.A.R.E. values and expectations. They have returned with a strong focus on fostering positive school routines and behaviours, and we couldn’t be more pleased with how quickly they are settling in.
We’re looking forward to a fantastic year ahead and are excited to continue working together to support our students' growth and success.
Ready for the School Year: Tips for a Smooth Start
The start of a new school year is an exciting time as teachers work to establish routines both in the classroom and on the school grounds. It is also a time when families get back into their own routines at home. To help set our students up for success this year, here are a few tips for a smooth start:
- Be organised in the mornings: Mornings can feel rushed, but planning ahead can make a big difference. By organising your routine in advance, you can help reduce stress for both parents and children, allowing you to ease into the school day.
- Ensure students arrive on time at 8:45am: Arriving on time helps to minimise anxiety, as students can walk into class with their peers and be present for the teacher’s introduction of the day’s timetable and expectations.
- Promote positive conversations: Let your child know that school staff are excited to see them. If they are feeling nervous or worried, remind them that it’s perfectly normal, and both you and their teachers are here to support them.
For more tips on preparing for the school year, Life Education offers some great resources for parents.
A Big Thank You to Mark Walmsley!

We truly appreciate the time, effort, and creativity Mark put into this initiative. It was wonderful to see the excited faces of the prep students when they were presented with them.
Thank you Mark, for your incredible work.
Drop Off/Pick Up Zone
Tingalpa State School has only one drop off/pick up zone - off Tenbar Street. The top carpark on Wynnum Road is not a drop off zone. Students should not be in this carpark unaccompanied by a parent. Please ensure that you are parking in designated carparks only.
Reminder that the pick-up zone closes at 3:15pm. If you are running late, please contact the office and we will bring your children into the office to be supervised until you arrive.
School Policies/Procedures
Some useful information for parents regarding school policies and procedures can be found in the Parent Handbook.
Please note the following:
- No jewellery other than watches and stud/sleeper earrings are to be worn at school. This is important for health and safety reasons.
- No make-up or nail polish is to be worn at school.
- No toys are to be brought to school. This is important as we do not want any student belongings to be damaged or lost. Please keep toys at home.
- The Department Parent and Community Code of Conduct supports learning, wellbeing and safety in every State School. Parents support safety by ensuring that their communications and conduct at the school and school events is respectful.
Important Information for Medical Feedback Requests
During Term 4, we received a significant number of requests from medical specialists asking for feedback from teachers regarding individual students. To ensure these requests are processed efficiently, please send them directly to admin@tingalpass.eq.edu.au.
It is important to note that any external feedback requests must have a completed Student Support Team referral sheet and permission to share form before they can be tabled at our weekly Student Support Team meetings. This can be organised by speaking to one of our SWAN teachers or your classroom teacher.
Please be aware that processing these requests can take up to three weeks, as teachers need to be released from teaching duties to complete them. For part-time teachers, this timeline may be extended.
NAPLAN
Tingalpa State School will be conducting NAPLAN Online. Students will participate in NAPLAN in Week 7 Term 1 – Wednesday 12 March concluding on Monday 24 March 2025.
The students will begin becoming familiar with the NAPLAN demonstration site and the variety of tools available in the NAPLAN Online Platform later this term. If you wish to withdraw your child or have any questions about participation for your child in NAPLAN Online, please contact me majon0@eq.edu.au to complete the official paperwork.

Welcome Back
Welcome to a new school year! We are excited to have our students back and look forward to a year of learning, growth, and success. It has been lovely to see the smiling faces of both students and staff as I check in with classes in the first week.
Our teachers have been preparing engaging lessons to inspire curiosity and achievement. We value your partnership and believe that working together helps our students thrive. Throughout the year, we will share updates on curriculum, learning opportunities, and ways to stay involved.
Assessment Review
This week we will be holding our Term 1 Assessment Review. This is a school-wide process where a teacher from each year level and specialist area meets with the Leadership Team to review the term’s summative assessment. These assessments are reported on against the relevant achievement standard. The process ensures alignment between the teaching and learning, and the Australian Curriculum in all classes and the French Curriculum in the bilingual classes.
Curriculum Overviews
Next week you will receive a copy of the Curriculum Overview for your child. These outline what your child will be learning across the Semester.

HEAD OF DEPARTMENT - French Bilingual Program - Emma Van Cuylenberg
Welcome back! Bonne rentrée!
I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new and returning families, I hope you all had a relaxing holiday. It has been wonderful to see all the students’ smiles and see them settling into their new classrooms over the last few days.
For the new families that I have not had a chance to meet yet, I am Madame Van, Head of Department for the French Bilingual Program at Tingalpa State School and Whites Hill State College. Working across the two sites means that my time is shared at both locations. This term, I am planning to be at Tingalpa on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Whites Hill on Mondays and Fridays with Wednesday being flexible depending on the schools’ needs. Please feel free to say hi when you see me around the school grounds.
Evaluations Nationales
In Week 3 of this term, our Year 1, 2 and 3 will undertakes the ‘évaluations nationales de Français’ (French National Assessments). The sessions will be spread out over 2 to 3 days and last between 8 and 30 minutes each depending on the year level. There are usually three French sessions including reading and comprehension, dictation for the older grades, sound and letter recognition for Year 1 and vocabulary. The 'évaluations nationales' are undertaken at the start of school every year in France and provide valuable information to the teachers with regards to students’ knowledge and understanding of French concepts. This information is used to plan and deliver targeted and differentiated learning opportunities for our students. The results will be shared with you at the end of Term 1.
French Film Festival
The French Film Festival will be held from March 6 to April 8. We are looking forward to receiving the school program and see if there are some sessions our students can attend this year.

Welcome to the 2025 school year! My name is Anna Ittensohn and I am thrilled to be your child’s Health and Physical Education (HPE) teacher once again here at Tingalpa State School. As we begin another exciting year, I am eager to introduce the students to a range of dynamic and enjoyable activities that will not only help them develop their physical skills but also enhance their overall wellbeing.
Throughout the year, the students will participate in a variety of sports, fitness challenges, and health-related lessons that aim to foster teamwork, resilience, and a love for physical activity. My goal is to create an inclusive and positive learning environment where every student feels encouraged to give their best, try new things, and have fun.
In addition to regular HPE lessons, we will also be participating in the annual Inter-house sporting carnivals and other extra-curricular sporting events throughout the year. These activities provide excellent opportunities for students to engage in friendly competition and showcase their talents.
I am excited to work alongside you and your child in making this a wonderful year of growth, achievement, and fun in Health and Physical Education.
10 – 12 Years BAYSIDE DISTRICT SCHOOL SPORT TRIALS
Students born in 2015, 2014 and 2013 have the opportunity to trial to represent the Bayside District School Sport in a number of sporting events over the course of the year. To trial, students will need to have a very good knowledge of the sport, rules and have a high level of skill. A parent/caregiver will need to support the trialling child by transporting them to and from the trial, along with supervising them as needed.
Please find below a list of Bayside District Sport trials held this year in chronological order. If your child is interested in trialling in any of the sports below, please complete a Bayside District Sport expression of interest form. See attached link or collect a form from the school office. Please ensure that you refer to the suitability to trial checklist below when nominating.
Bayside District Sport also hosts three major district trial carnivals across the year, Swimming, Cross Country and Track and Field. For many of these trials club participation, professionally recorded times or proof of distances competed may be a prerequisite to attend the event. Nominations for these events come from the school only.
