National Simultaneous Storytime
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 25th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
This year NSS takes place on Wednesday 21 May 2025 at 11:00am, Mrs Pop will be reading the book in the library at first break.
If you would like to get involved at home, please feel free to register your interest below. You will be supplied with some resources to join in the event.
The event is FREE! Enter today!
By facilitating NSS we aim to:
- promote the value of reading and literacy,
- promote the value and fun of books,
- promote an Australian writer and publisher,
- celebrate and promote Storytime activities in public libraries, school libraries, classrooms, bookshops and communities around the country,
- and provide opportunities to involve parents, caregivers, the media, and others to participate in and enjoy the occasion.
NSS receives positive media coverage and generates a great deal of community interest. 2024 was our biggest and most successful NSS to date with over 2.3 million participants at over 21,000 locations!
What do they look for in the National Simultaneous Storytime book?
Each year, interested publishers send in possible titles. From a practical perspective, the publisher must be able and willing to provide copyright release for use of the illustrations, book projection, translation into other languages and performance. The publisher also needs to commit to a special print run of several thousand copies. This narrows down the options. The criteria for choosing from the remaining books include: a positive storyline; appeal to a modern and diverse audience; suitability for read-aloud (language and length); how well the book lends itself to craft and other activities.
THE TRUCK CAT
A story about cats and humans, immigration and identity, and homes lost and found.
Some cats are house cats. Some are apartment cats.
But Tinka is a truck cat. Tinka lives everywhere.
Along with his human, Yacoub, Tinka travels roads wide and narrow, near and distant. But no matter how much they travel, home feels very far away – for both of them.
Yacoub drives his truck to make a living, learning the landscape of a new country along the way, and longing for connection. When Tinka and Yacoub are unexpectedly separated, they are determined to find their way back to each other – and, in doing so, might find more than they expected …
The Premier's Reading Challenge
The Premier's Reading Challenge is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Through the challenge children and students are given an opportunity to develop their appreciation of the English language and additional languages and are encouraged to explore and enjoy a wide range of literary texts.
Children and students can participate in the challenge within their school, early childhood centre or as individual readers (home-educated students, students whose schools are not participating in the program or children who are not enrolled in an early childhood centre).
Children and students who complete the challenge have their efforts recognised through the receipt of a Certificate of Achievement. Early childhood centres will also receive a centre-wide certificate of recognition for their involvement.
Schools, early childhood centres and parents of individual readers are encouraged to recognise reading achievements by holding classroom, school or home ceremonies to present certificates during the Premier's Reading Challenge celebrations weeks.
School and individual readers (Prep to Year 9)
For a student to successfully complete the Premier's Reading Challenge they are required to read or experience the number of books indicated below:
- Prep to Year 2—read or experience 20 books.
- Years 3 to 4—read 20 books.
- Years 5 to 9—read 15 books.
Experiencing a book includes classroom or at home activities such as shared reading, listening and reading along with a book, or being read to.
The requirement for Year 5 through to Year 9 students to read 15 books rather than 20 books acknowledges that older students are likely to select longer, more complex books that may take them longer to read.
Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability. While there is no compulsory reading list for the challenge, book lists are available to help students, teachers, parents and guardians select appropriate reading material.
* Teachers and parents can determine when they commence and conclude the reading challenge to suit their requirements, if they are within the timeframes outlined above.
HEAD OF DEPARTMENT - CURRICULUM - Elise Debenham
On Thursday 24 April, we were fortunate enough to have PLD (Promoting Literacy Development) trainer, Tayla Kleinschmidt, attend our school for the day to work with our Year 3 - 6 teachers. The teachers worked collaboratively together to create class specific groupings and a teaching focus for the term for their classes. They actively participated in activities to develop their understanding of the program and what it would look like in the classroom. We look forward to seeing the roll out of the spelling program across our Year 3 to 6 classrooms.

Respectful Relationships Education
At Tingalpa, we are committed to supporting the wellbeing and safety of our students. As part of our wellbeing and curriculum programs, we are delivering Respectful Relationships Education (RRE) across all year levels. Across the school, we are implementing RRE across multiple contexts including our Health and Physical Education curriculum, Wellbeing lessons and our classrooms teachers.
RRE is everyone’s business. We encourage families to talk with their children about what they’re learning and reinforce these values at home. Throughout the year we will be sharing resources developed by the department for parents to use at home. Below you will find information about the role of parents and carers for building respectful relationships.
Role of parents and carers in building respectful relationships
As a parent or carer, you play a primary role in teaching your child to treat others with respect, and to help them set an expectation to be treated with respect. Children and young people need the skills to build safe and healthy relationships with their family, friends, peers, work mates and others, in all aspects of their lives.
While schools play an important role in providing students with respectful relationships education, it is the responsibility of parents, carers and the community more broadly to model relationships that are respectful, and to support young people to address issues that arise.
You can directly shape your child’s values and understanding of relationships, including seeking permission and setting boundaries, recognising behaviours that cause harm and seeking help, communicating with others, valuing different opinions, resolving conflict and promoting equality and inclusion. The conversations parents and carers have at home are fundamental in helping children and young people develop the social and emotional skills needed to successfully:
- engage positively with others
- develop a positive sense of self and resilience
- identify and respond appropriately to their own emotions and those of others
- accept and resolve differences respectfully
- challenge stereotypes
- be confident in challenging unacceptable behaviours they see
- build relationships that are based on equality and respect.
QLD Police Think U Know Session
On Thursday afternoon our Year 5 and 6 students will be participating in the Queensland Police Think U Know sessions. Students will participate in an evidence-based education program incorporating up-to-date research and is linked to the Australian Curriculum. Presentations help students make informed decisions to keep themselves safe online and how they can overcome challenges through help seeking behaviour. Think U Know ensure they are age-appropriate and relevant to students’ learning. This program also aligns with the Respectful Relationships Education program which is being rolled out as part of the Australian Curriculum.

Year 1A Writing
This term in 1A, our students are orally retelling and writing a retell in simple sentences about a familiar story. Students have been reading Mr McGee texts by Pamela Allen, to focus on what is happening at the beginning, middle and end of the story.

Year 5/6 Media and English
This term in Year 5/6, students are learning about how to create a podcast. Our amazing media teacher, Carmel Loane, is providing students with opportunities to practice the skills they need to create their own podcast on an app called, Podbean. Once they have learnt the skills of podcasting, students will be writing their own Podcast for their English assessment task.

HEAD OF DEPARTMENT - French Bilingual Program - Emma Van Cuylenberg
New French program – curriculum
Presented to the Conseil supérieur de l’éducation in June 2024, the new French and mathematics programs for cycle 2 (CP, CE1 and CE2) were published in the Official Journal of October 25, 2024 and will come into effect at the start of the 2025 school year in France. New programs for cycle 3 (CM1, CM2 and 6e) will also come into effect at the start of the 2025 school year in France.
Last week, the French bilingual teachers and myself got together during a staff meeting to learn about the changes put in place in the new programs. Over the coming terms, we will continue to explore the French programs and prepare for implementation at the start of our 2026 school year.
AAFEBS reading competition – Leve ta voix
This Thursday and Friday, we are running our in-school reading sessions to choose the finalists for each category. Finalists will be joining other AAFEBS schools for the finals which will take place on Thursday 29 May at 9:30am (Canberra time) by video conference. Communication will be sent to the families of the finalists in the coming week.
I would like to particularly thank Madame Jourde who has made our participation in this contest possible. From her liaison with the organisers, contact with families and teachers, the running of additional reading practices during lunchtimes and her help in the selection of finalists, she has made it all possible.
I also would like to thank Miss Cruchon, Miss Valette and Madame Danne for their support and help with reading practices and selection of finalists.
Meeting with Anne Genetet
On Thursday 24 April, I had the privilege of meeting Anne Genetet, Member of Parliament for French citizens abroad (11th constituency) and former Minister of Education, during her visit to Brisbane. This meeting, facilitated by the The Honorary Consul of France in Brisbane, Alain Etchegaray, was part of her meeting with French associations in Brisbane and provided a fantastic opportunity to share about our French Bilingual Program and its expansion into Whites Hill State College. Madame Genetet was very inquisitive and impressed by the progression of the program in recent years.

Hayden S and Arana M – Rugby League Success!
A huge well done to Hayden S and Arana M, who competed at the Metropolitan East Regional 10 – 12 Years Rugby League trial on Wednesday 30 April and Thursday 1 May. Both boys played very well, gave it their all, and proudly represented Tingalpa State School. Competing at a regional level is a fantastic achievement and an unforgettable experience for both Hayden and Arana.
Congratulations to Arana M, who has been selected for the Metropolitan East 10 – 12 Years Rugby League Team and will go on to compete at the State Championships – Vic Jensen Cup, from 29 June to 3 July 2025.
Best of luck with your training, Arana, and all the best for the championships ahead!
We are so excited that our senior jumpers have finally arrived, and we look forward to the seniors rocking the new design. We also suggest getting your winter orders in, so you don’t get caught out when the weather turns cold.
We have a few more delicious shepherd's pies available to order and were astonished to see how popular they were. Get in quick whilst stock lasts.
If you could please remind your children that they will be required to collect from the tuckshop certain menu items like ice blocks, hot drinks and soup. They will receive their tuckshop bag, and this item will be highlighted, letting them know they will need to collect directly from us. This helps us to serve food at the optimal temperature, keeping soups warm and ice blocks frozen.
Enjoy your fortnight ahead.
If you are interested in a relief Teacher's Aid position or know someone who is, please contact Nicole Will nwill202@eq.edu.au.
All applicants must be in possession of a paid bluecard or able to apply for one.
