Teaching and Learning
Our teachers will be participating in the next round of professional learning sessions, starting next week. They will be reviewing Term 1 academic data and using this for planning and teaching considerations. They will also be developing maths learning walls that assist students with understanding what they will be learning during the term and the achievement expectations as well as supporting materials on key concepts.
Staffing Changes
We are saying farewell to Mrs Bianca Haines, who is moving into a new inclusion teacher position at another school. We wish her all the best with the opportunity. Ms Nicole Kendrick will be taking over her position on 3A.
Student State School Consent
It is the school’s usual practice to take photographs or record images of students and occasionally to publish limited personal information and student materials for the purpose of celebrating student achievement and promoting the school and more broadly celebrating Queensland education. Consent to use your child's name, photograph, voice/video recording or year level is requested at enrolment via the "State School Consent Form". If you wish to make changes to consent for your child please request a new State School Consent Form from the school office.

Bayside DV Candlelight Vigil
Joan Pease MP is pleased to invite our community to attend the Bayside DV Candlelight Vigil on Wednesday 7 May 2025 from 5:30 – 6:15pm.
May is Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) Awareness month, and the Bayside DV Candlelight Vigil is an important annual event in the local calendar to send a clear message: that DFV in our Bayside will never be tolerated.
This event provides an opportunity to hear from insightful guest speakers in the Wynnum Foreshore Park – just behind Pandanus Beach - before lighting candles and walking onto the sand at Pandanus Beach for a moment of reflection.
Registration for the Bayside DV Candlelight Vigil is free and can be accessed by scanning the QR code on the attached flyer.
ANZAC Day has been remembered in Queensland state schools since 1916, the year following the landing at Gallipoli. We are proud to continue the remembrance of the first ANZAC Day at Tingalpa State School. Thank you to all our special guests, Mrs Joan Pease, Member of Parliament for Lytton, Carrie Harman, representative for Lisa Atwood Local Member for the Doboy Ward, Kelly Shoecraft, the P&C representative. Thank you to the students and teachers for participating in the ceremony. The students listened to a commemorative address from Air Craft Woman Sharelle Phillips.
The theme for Anzac Day 2025 is "Remembering Gallipoli: 110 years". This theme commemorates the 110-year anniversary of the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps troops at Gallipoli, Turkey, and reflects on the contributions made by service personnel throughout history. It encourages engagement with the stories of Gallipoli veterans and the significance of their service.
Anzac Day, 25 April, is one of Australia’s most important national occasions. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. It goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day on which we remember all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in war and on operational service. The spirit of Anzac, with its qualities of courage, mateship and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity.
Why is this day special to Australians?
When war broke out in 1914 Australia had been a federated nation for only 13 years, and its government was eager to establish a reputation among the nations of the world. When Britain declared war in August 1914 Australia was automatically placed on the side of the Commonwealth. In 1915 Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the allied navies. The ultimate objective was to capture Constantinople (now Istanbul), the capital of the Ottoman Empire, an ally of Germany.
The Australian and New Zealand forces landed on Gallipoli on 25 April, meeting fierce resistance from the Ottoman Turkish defenders. What had been planned as a bold stroke to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915 the allied forces were evacuated from the peninsula, with both sides having suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. More than 8,000 Australian soldiers died in the campaign. Gallipoli had a profound impact on Australians at home, and 25 April soon became the day on which Australians remembered the sacrifice of those who died in the war. Although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives, the actions of Australian and New Zealand forces during the campaign left a powerful legacy. What became known as the “ANZAC legend” became an important part of the identity of both nations, shaping the ways in which they viewed both their past and their future.

Rosemary: an ancient symbol of remembrance and has particular significance for Australians as it grows wild on the slopes of Gallipoli. The ancients believed it strengthened the memory, and on this account, it became an emblem of mateship and a symbol of remembrance. It is worn on or around ANZAC Day to honour the memory of the fallen and those who have served.

Term 2 Lunchtime Activities at Tingalpa State School
The staff at Tingalpa State School work hard to provide a variety of activities for students to enjoy during lunchtime. Below is a list of the activities available in Term 2:
Animals on School Grounds
We would like to remind all members of our school community that dogs and other animals (excluding local wildlife) are not permitted on school grounds without prior permission from the principal. This is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students, staff, and families.
Even the most well-behaved pets can behave unpredictably in busy, unfamiliar environments, and we appreciate your cooperation in keeping our school a safe space for everyone.
Permission for animals on site may be considered on a case-by-case basis, such as for certified therapy or assistance animals, and only if school procedures and conditions are followed. Service animals (e.g. seeing-eye or hearing assistance dogs) are permitted with their owner and must be accommodated appropriately, with suitable shelter and nourishment while on site.
With the upcoming election taking place on school grounds, we kindly ask that you remind any friends or family attending the school to vote that dogs are not permitted on campus during this time. This helps us maintain a clean and safe environment, and prevents issues such as dog excrement on school grounds, which can pose a health risk and impact the cleanliness of our campus.
Please ensure dogs and pets are not brought to school during drop-off, pick-up, or any other time unless specific permission has been granted.
If you have any questions or need to request permission for an animal to be on site, please contact me directly at devan78@eq.edu.au.

QLD Police Think U Know Session
On Wednesday 8 May our Year 5 and 6 students will be participating in the Queensland Police Think U Know sessions. Students will participate in an evidence-based education program incorporating up-to-date research that is linked to the Australian Curriculum. Presentations help students make informed decisions to keep themselves safe online and how they can overcome challenges through help seeking behaviour. Think U Know ensure they are age-appropriate and relevant to students’ learning. HEAD OF DEPARTMENT - French Bilingual Program - Emma Van Cuylenberg
As we settle into a new term, it is a great time to review and set homework routines at home to ensure students are successful in their bilingual education. Whilst homework is not compulsory, we encourage students to complete the homework set in French and in English to ensure the consolidation of skills learnt in class.
In French, learning the conjugation, practicing spelling words and reading are essential to our students’ success and confidence in their French. Conjugation, while it starts with simpler tenses, does increase in complexity over the years and setting up our students for success, having a strong foundation is essential. A little bit everyday goes a long way over the school years.
You can see our Tingalpa State School’s homework guidelines here.
Before School French reading support
This term we will be running before school French literacy support sessions with a focus on reading for our students in Year 2 and Year 3. The aim of these sessions is to help students build their confidence in reading in French. Families of students invited to participate in the sessions were emailed at the beginning of the week.
Prix du Civisme for Year 5 & Year 6 students
As a primary school where French is taught, we have received a letter from the Australian section of the French National Order of Merit (ANMONM) letting us know that applications are now open for the Prix du Civisme.
The Ordre National du Mérite was founded by General De Gaulle on December 3, 1963. The order is designed to acknowledge those who have made an outstanding contribution to society in both civil and military domains. Providing exceptional service to others, to the nation, selflessly and on a volunteer basis are hallmarks of the order.
The aim of the Prix du Civisme is to encourage young people to undertake projects to assist others. These may be actions of personal courage, projects and actions to benefit the wider community both in Australia and abroad, projects and actions designed to protect the environment and wildlife or reduce pollution or waste and emissions, and projects aimed at helping the disadvantaged in our communities reflecting the values of ‘liberty, equality and fraternity’.
The 2024 first prize winners for Years 5/6 (Leyla Mackenzie- Aranda Primary School) and Years 9/10 (Anita Kumar- Canberra Grammar School) participated in a range of activities including volunteering at a soup kitchen to help the homeless, volunteering at the Red Cross, and corresponding with elderly citizens in Canada.
We will be talking about this project to our Year 5/6 students next week however, you are welcome to bring it to your child/ren’s attention if you think it could be something they are interested in. I will be sharing the information pack with families next week.
You can find some more information about this project here.
