DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - Matt Jones

On Thursday 14 August, some of our dedicated staff attended the Chaplaincy Dinner to show support for our school chaplaincy program and celebrate the incredible work that Chappy Lynda does for our community. The evening was filled with a delicious meal, exciting raffles, and auctions, all aimed at raising funds for the chaplaincy program.

School chaplains, like Chappy Lynda, play a vital role in providing social, emotional, and pastoral support to school communities. They focus on prevention and support, helping students navigate through difficult times and offer a listening ear to those who simply need a friend. Chappy Lynda also extends her care and support to staff and parents within our school community.

Fire Evacuation Drill

Yesterday the school undertook our Term 3 Fire Evacuation drill. These drills are undertaken four times a year to comply with Education Queensland policies and procedures to ensure the safety of our students, staff, volunteers and visitors.

We have become very efficient with the evacuation process and yesterday we set a record of 7 minutes and 32 seconds.  This is the timing from when the alarm sounds, the whole school then assembles on the oval and all students, staff and visitors are accounted for. The students were excited to see the new Emergency Warden high-vis appareil worn by our Fire Management team.  Congratulations Tingalpa State School on your wonderful effort.  Keep up the good work!

Maths expert Week 8 visit to Tingalpa

Next week, Tingalpa is excited to welcome Michael Minas, a mathematical education consultant. On Thursday, Michael will be working with classes, demonstrating problem solving and mathematical modelling in action. Teachers and learning assistants will have the opportunity to observe and reflect on these sessions to support their own professional learning.

On the student free day on Friday, we will be joined by one of our cluster schools Wynnum West State School, as we collaborate with Michael to deepen our understanding of mathematical modelling and explore how to implement authentic problem solving across our classrooms.

This visit is a valuable opportunity for our school to continue building capability, strengthening our knowledge of the updated Maths v9 curriculum, and working collaboratively with colleagues to enhance teaching practices.

Band and Choir performances at next week’s assembly

Just a reminder that next week’s (Week 8) assembly will feature performances from our talented band and choir students! The choir led by Mr Allen and the band, directed by Mrs Finlay, have been working hard and we can’t wait to showcase their amazing talent.

Please note that assembly will be starting earlier than usual to accommodate our Book Week costume parade, as well as, these performances and still allow time for our usual celebration of student achievement. Be sure to arrive on time so you don’t miss any of the excitement.

A big thank you to Mrs Finlay and Mr Allen for their continued dedication to our students' growth and performance.

We look forward to seeing you there!

New Pick-Up Zone covered area a big success

Pick_up_zone.jpg

Since the installation of the new covered area near our Pick-Up zone, we have seen a noticeable improvement in how smoothly pick-up times are running each day. The structure has helped streamline the process, keeping pathways clear and making it easier for families to safely access the school site.

The shelter has also been especially handy during rainy afternoons, providing comfort and protection for both students and families as they wait. It has been a fantastic addition to our school grounds and a real benefit to our daily routines.

A big thank you goes to our amazing learning assistants who manage the pick-up zone each afternoon. Their organisation, care, and commitment help ensure everything runs safely and efficiently—rain, hail or shine!

Exploring fractions on a number line with 3/4B

Over the past term, I was lucky enough to work with the wonderful 3/4B classes, diving into the world of fractions and exploring how to represent them on a number line. It was an engaging and hands-on experience, and we even got the chalk out to create large number lines on concrete!

The students had the chance to visually see and place different fractions, not just as individual points, but as part of a continuous number line. We explored equivalence in fractions, showing how different fractions can represent the same value, and even tackled the challenge of placing fractions with different denominators on the same number line.

It was amazing to see their excitement as they got creative, challenging themselves to add fractions and represent them accurately. One of the most rewarding parts for me was watching how the students applied the knowledge they had acquired from previous lessons to help them work through these challenges.

A huge thank you to the 3/4B students for their enthusiasm and hard work.
