Think U Know QLD Police Talk

Due to Cyclone Alfred, the Think U Know QLD Police Talk has been rescheduled to Thursday 8 May.

Students in Year 5 and 6 will participate in an evidence-based education program incorporating up-to-date research and is linked to the Australian Curriculum.  Presentations help students make informed decisions to keep themselves safe online and how they can overcome challenges through help seeking behaviour.  Think U Know ensure they are age-appropriate and relevant to students’ learning.

Year 3 Excursion – Toohey Forest

On Tuesday 25 March and Wednesday 26 March our Year 3 students attended the Toohey Forrest Environmental Education Centre program Grow and Change. Students became biologists-in-training for the day and observed the growth of living things, identified and recorded life cycle stages of plants and animals and understood how non-living things are important for a healthy forest.

Prep PLD Visitors

On Friday 21 March, our Prep teachers and students welcomed some early years teachers and the Principal from Lota State School to their classrooms. Our visitors were very excited to see the amazing work that our prep students have been doing in the PLD space.  They observed our students participate in daily reviews, literacy rotations and then sat with our teachers to discuss how Tingalpa has implemented PLD and how successful it has been so far.

What is PLD?

PLD is an evidence-based Australian literacy program designed to develop children’s reading and writing skills.  Aligned with the Science of Reading, PLD’s approach extends from the junior primary years through to upper primary years and thereby facilitating a whole school approach. This method of reading helps children to learn the relationships between the sounds (phonemes) of spoken language and the letter symbols (graphemes) of the written language.

PLD’s method is derived from the disciplines of speech pathology, occupational therapy and education. As an Australian publisher and professional development provider, PLD advocates that literacy and learning outcomes are maximised for children when their literacy, oral language and movement & motor skills are targeted.

If you would like to read more about PLD, you can find information on their website at https://pld-literacy.org/ They have parent resources as well which have been created by speech pathologists and occupational therapists.

Year 4 Learning Wall

In Term 1, students in Year 4 have been exploring a range of persuasive texts. They have identified and analysed persuasive techniques authors use to impact the target audience. These techniques include high modality words, rhetorical questions and evaluative language. Students have created persuasive texts portraying a particular viewpoint on a topic.

In curriculum planning time, teachers work on deconstructing the marking guide to ensure consistency across all classrooms.  They then create Success Criteria to match the marking guide which they then deconstruct with students in the classroom.

As you can see in the photos, our students have loved co-creating their Learning Wall as well as writing some amazing pieces of work.
