HEAD OF DEPARTMENT - CURRICULUM - Elise Debenham

Author Talk
On Wednesday 26 February, our Year 3, 4 and 5 students were involved in an author talk with Deborah Abela. Deb spoke to the students about how she became an author, the ins and outs of writing and also showed students some of her books and spoke about the inspiration behind each of the books. All of the students were engaged and many questions were thrown at Deb after and throughout the talk.
One of the key things that she repeated to students was “I wonder what would happen if…” This allowed our students to continue their thoughts on stories and to develop characters and problems throughout the story.

Think U Know QLD Police Talk
On Thursday 6 March, students in Year 5 and 6 will participate in the Think U Know program run by QLD Police. This talk is an evidence-based education program incorporating up-to-date research and is linked to the Australian Curriculum. Presentations help students make informed decisions to keep themselves safe online and how they can overcome challenges through help seeking behaviour. Think U Know ensure they are age-appropriate and relevant to students’ learning.
The session covers the following learning outcomes:
- Students will analyse how behaviours online can influence both their online and offline personal safety and recognise their role in maintaining their safety.
- Students will consider their ethical and legal obligations when sharing or receiving content from others.
- Students will develop strategies to make informed decisions around what they do and don’t share online.
- Students will recognise the difference between people they know in person and those they know online only, and common indicators of potential unsafe online interactions.
Students will identify trusted adults and when to seek help.
