Last day of Term 3 |
19 September 2025 |
On Tuesday I shared further information, with our school community, about a 1:1 device program at Tingalpa State School. This included our draft Digital Learning Policy outlining greater detail on what digital learning and the 1:1 device program will look like at Tingalpa State School. I also attached an updated copy of the presentation shared at the community consultation meeting. This information has been provided to answer questions raised during the community meeting.
A link was included in the email, for parents/carers to complete an anonymous community survey on digital learning and the 1:1 device program.
We value community input into our ways of working and hope you will take a few minutes to complete the survey. It will remain open until Monday 25 August 2025.
School Opinion Survey
The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys is conducted in Term 3 and will close on 22 August 2025. All families, school staff and students in target year levels (5, 6, 8 and 11) will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve.
An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey has been emailed to one parent/caregiver per family between the 21 July – 25 July. The invitation was sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2025. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.
Parents/caregivers who do not have access to the internet at home are welcome to complete their survey online at the school. School computers/tablets will be available.
Tingalpa SS Science Competition
Last week our school community had the opportunity to see the Science Competition displays. The entries were outstanding and informative. Each year I select a junior and senior entry to receive the Principal’s Award, and as usual it was extremely difficult to select the winners. I would like to say thank you to the students for their inspiring work and their families for supporting them with their experiments and investigations. A huge thank you to Mrs Grimes who works with our students across the year to develop a fascination and love for science during lessons. We look forward to presenting awards to the participants on assembly next week.
Bullying No Way
This year Tingalpa State School is participating in the Bullying No Way: National week of action, 11 to 15 August 2024.Bullying No Way Week is a commitment being made by thousands of schools and supporters across the country. It provides an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to bullying prevention.
The theme for this year's campaign is Be Bold. Be Kind. Speak Up. It takes courage to spark change.
Bullying is everyone's responsibility. It takes a community to be brave and address bullying behaviours, within and beyond the school gate.
Students can be bold, kind and take a stand to support others being bullied, while parents and teachers are there to support children and young people learn how to behave in a positive way.
In our community and in our school, we want a place where everyone can belong, a place that celebrates everyone, and where bullying is never accepted.
This theme highlights the importance of creating a sense of belonging and inclusion for students. We recognise bullying often thrives in environments where individuals feel marginalised or excluded, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that every student feels valued and respected.
“Positive school climates that value diversity and inclusion can foster a sense of belonging and provide a protective factor against negative peer relationships and reduce bullying.”
(Australian Education Research Organisation 2023).
For more information about Bullying No Way Week and bullying prevention, visit the Bullying No Way website.
The new hero colour for the campaign is purple – symbolising peace, strength and empowerment to take a stand against bullying behaviour.
This Friday 15 August Tingalpa State School will be showing support for Bullying No Way Day. We encourage all students to wear purple or orange. A reminder to wear sun safe clothing and enclosed shoes. Students will need their school hats. Please refrain from using hairspray and zinc on the day.

Year 5/6 Camp at Camp Goodenough
On Tuesday 30 July, the Year 5/6 students set off for an unforgettable adventure at Camp Goodenough. Over three action-packed days, students were challenged through a variety of exciting activities designed to build resilience, encourage teamwork, and push them beyond their comfort zones.
Students took part in a range of thrilling activities, including the high ropes course, crate stack, leap of faith, team pursuit, and building and driving billy karts. Each activity offered opportunities for students to support one another, develop new skills, and grow in confidence.
Meal times were another important part of camp life, with students enjoying a variety of tasty meal options while also taking responsibility for setting up and cleaning up which is a great opportunity to build independence, resilience and cooperation.
Evenings at camp were just as exciting, with a night-time scavenger hunt around the campgrounds and a relaxed movie night on the second evening, providing a fun way to wind down after busy days.
The staff at Camp Goodenough were full of praise for our students, commenting on their positive attitudes, teamwork, and resilience throughout the camp.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to Mrs Bowden, Mrs Jones, Mrs Carr, Mr Kingston, Mrs Carter, Miss Gail, and Chappy Lynda for generously volunteering their time to supervise and support the students. Without staff volunteers, experiences like this would not be possible.
A special thank you to Mrs Bowden for her incredible effort in organising this year’s camp, and to Miss Gail for managing the camp medication. Your support is truly appreciated!
"Camp was amazing! All the activities were challenging and fun - especially the high ropes course. The friendly staff were always willing to help and they were very encouraging during the leap of faith when some of us students were nervous. I enjoyed spending some quality time with my friends and now I have a new happy memory!" Marlow P
"I loved all the activities because they encouraged us to step out of our comfort zone and work together. I'm so thankful for all the camp staff and school staff who helped us overcome our fears. I made so many new memories with my friends and the new ones along the way." Kenzie A

Tingalpa Secures 2025 Community Grant
We are excited to share that Tingalpa State School has been successful in obtaining a $5,000 Community Grant, proudly provided by the Wynnum Manly Leagues Club.
A huge congratulations to Mrs Lisa Leclerc and Mrs Jane Klose for their outstanding work on the grant application. Their dedication and efforts are truly appreciated. Watch out around the school soon for the installation of three sensory play panels; Tic Tac Toe, Today's Weather and What's the Time. We are excited to see the students enjoying themselves with these new additions to the playground.
We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the Wynnum Manly Leagues Club for their continued support of local schools and community groups. Through their 2025 Community Grant Program alone, they have contributed an incredible $68,570 to schools, kindergartens, sporting clubs, and essential community services.
Pop-up Pizza Shop in 1C
Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting 1C to help celebrate their fantastic learning, and what a treat it was!
Under the guidance of Miss Chiverton, the students in 1C have been hard at work exploring procedures. As part of their learning, they created detailed and clear instructions that culminated in the creation of their very own Pop-up Pizza Shop.
During my visit, I spoke with the students about the purpose of procedures and the importance of using specific, clear language, especially when it comes to making something as delicious as pizza. I was so impressed with the methodical approach and attention to detail.
Their procedure must have been spot on, because the pizzas turned out absolutely delicious. In fact, they were so good that some proud representatives delivered slices to Mrs O’Keeffe to share the success.
A big congratulations to Miss Chiverton and the wonderful 1C students on such an engaging and tasty learning experience!
"This term we have been learning about procedures. We have been learning safety instructions in our method. We also have to make sure we clearly tell how much of an ingredient we need. My favourite part of the Pizza Pop-up Shop was eating it." Atticus B
"I have enjoyed writing procedures this term. We have created lots of procedures like: how to make a milo, how to make fairy bread, how to make sandwiches. My favourite thing about the Pizza Pop-up Shop was eating the ham and cheese pizza." Ellie M

Prep Excursion – Daisy Hill Koala Centre
On Friday 1 August, our Prep students alongside their teachers, and many parent helpers, ventured to the Daisy Hill Koala Centre and Conservation Park. The smile on the students' faces as they headed off on their first excursion, some their first bus trip, is something we will not forget. I was lucky enough to visit the Prep students after their excursion and below you will find some of their learnings and favourite parts of their first excursion.
Angus – P/1A – My favourite part of the excursion was the Koala pooping. I learnt that koalas make strange noises to talk to other koalas.
Thomas – P/1A – I learnt that Koalas can climb up trees to find their food and they eat leaves from special trees.
Rachel – PB – I learnt that koalas sleep a lot and that they live in trees and eat lots of leaves. On our excursion we had a picnic and we went for a walk to the Koala house.
Aiden – PB – I learnt that baby koalas eat their Mums poo. It helps them to live. I also learnt that they live in trees. We even went on a bushwalk which was really fun.
Maddi – P/1A – Ms Lineburg was videoing the Koalas and then it started to poop. It was very funny. I learnt that koalas climb up trees to eat the green leaves. We also went to the Koala Centre and had a picnic for morning tea and lunch. On our bushwalk we had to find clues to find the Koala Centre. We also saw little spiders on the bush walk.
Inaya – PC – We went on a bus and went to the Koala centre. We played games, balanced on branches and went on walks. We saw some really funny trees that had funny shapes bent in them. When we went to the Koala centre there were 3 Koalas and they were all asleep.
Thomas – PC – We went on a walk and saw lots of different trees. Some of the trees were really wobbly and funny. We then went to the Koala centre and they told us how Koalas move and what they eat. We also learnt how to keep Koalas safe.

Curriculum Overviews
Curriculum Overviews have now been sent home to families. Each Semester we provide these documents to families to keep you informed about what your child will be learning. These summaries highlight key topics and skills. By sharing these overviews, we aim to keep parents connected, encourage questions, and strengthen the home-school partnership. The Curriculum overviews are also located on our school website for future reference.
4A Poetry
Year 4 students in 4A have been listening to, viewing, reading and comparing a range of poems. They have been looking at the language features which are included in poems and have started writing their own poems. At the end of the term, they will write and present a poem to an audience. Lily S has typed up her poem which she would love to share with our families. Well done Lily!
The Dark Ominous Night
On a dark ominous night
Rain falls and lightning strikes.
I see:
Bright blue bolts of lightning spearing down
Grey gloomy clouds crying heavy rain.
The dark ominous night sky looking frighteningly down on me
The beautiful shimmering stars shining in the night sky.
I feel:
The rain annoyingly attacking my tired shoulders
A scared feeling flowing through my veins.
Frighting lightning bolts rumbling the ground
My heart pounding loudly in my chest with every lightning strike.
I wonder:
What will the terrible outcome of the floods be?
When will the lightning bolts strike?
Where will the terrifying thunder crash next?
When will this horror finally come to an end?
I look through my window trying not to get a fright
I hope there’s not another scary lightning strike
-Lily S
Containers for Change competition
We have started off our Containers for Change competition and have already collected 1600 containers in 2 weeks.
Students are encouraged to collect and bring in eligible 10c containers (such as drink bottles and cans with the 10c mark) each week. All items collected will go towards raising funds for our P&C, supporting valuable programs and resources for our school community.
How it works:
- Students to collect 10c container throughout the week in their classroom ‘containers for change’ bag.
- Please ensure that the containers have been rinsed prior to bringing to school.
- No alcoholic containers can be brought into school for our collection.
- Each Friday, totals will be counted by the Student Council and containers will be placed in our school’s Containers for Change bin.
- A running tally will be kept throughout the term.
The winning class or year level will be announced at the Week 8 parade, and a special reward will be given!
This is a fantastic opportunity for students to get involved in fundraising, sustainability, and a little friendly competition. Every container counts so let’s work together to make a big impact for our school and our environment.

2025 TINGALPA SCIENCE COMPETITION with MRS GRIMES
A big congratulations to the students who participated in the 2025 Tingalpa Science Competition. We had 27 projects submitted this year by some of our amazing students.
Our competition aligns with National Science Week celebrated from 9 – 17 August.
The projects have been on display in the Cre8 Centre this week allowing all classes to come and enjoy the projects during their science lesson, congratulate the students involved, and learn a little about different science topics. The topics ranged from the constellations in our night sky, how to recycle paper, to how cup phones work.
The projects were judged against set criteria with the students awarded a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award. Mrs O’Keeffe’s job of awarding the Senior and Junior Principal Awards was quite challenging due to the very high standard of the projects this year. Why I decided to volunteer: To fine-tune my BBQ skills! And it seemed an easy way to help out.
Children at Tingalpa: Amelia (grade 5), Sarah (grade 2)
When I’m not voluntary: I’m park-running, camping and cheering on Under 8's soccer games.
Fun Fact: I've supported Liverpool FC since 1986, when an Australian, Craig Johnstone, scored for them in the FA Cup final. As a kid hearing about it on the news, I decided they had to be my team.
